Cassian Andor, Kay Tooesso

Время: 11 BBY
Место: in a galaxy far, far away
Описание: Cassian is old enough to start helping out on missions, but apparently he isn’t old enough to do it on his own.

the timeline

10.V — Cassian is assigned to be Kay’s trainee
11.V — Kay and Cassian get their first mission and discuss how to approach it. Sometime later that day they go to Uquine.
20.V — a woman comes to them with a job, “a simple fishing tool which can provide access to internal messages of any network it’s implemented into.” They suspect she’s from a cell. (And she is from a fake one.)
21.V — in the morning after finishing the job they talk about why Cassian things the Empire is bad. Cassian passes the finished job back to the woman. Kay tinkers with commlinks turning them into GPS, and in the evening they both go to a (rebel) talk at a cantina called Low Deck. There are people watching them at the cantina. Kay gets thoroughly drunk, and Cassian has to drag him home. The apartment didn’t get searched as Kay thought it would.
22.V — Kay tasks Cassian with asking around about the people who watched them in the cantina the day before. Cassian learns from his friends that there are two cells, one is fake, the other is not.
25.V — a twi’lek and a woman (from a real cell) ambush Kay and Cassian on their home from a grocery store. They demand explanation about Cassian asking around risky question a few days ago. Turns out, the rebels know the woman, Marani, too. Cassian and Kay learn that Marani was about to switch sides when she was killed—right after she collected their work. Kay is forced to show the twi’lek his slave marks so the rebels would let them both go. Finally, they exchange contacts.
26.V — Kay suddenly leaves Cassian alone and goes looking for the Imperial cell.
27.V — The next day the fake cell comes and searches the apartment while Cassian is out.
29.V — a man (Elek), saying he’s from a local rebel cell, comes to Cassian with a job, he wants a simple decoding program.
30.V — Not succeeding in his endeavour, Kay returns to the apartment where he left Cassian. They exchange the news. Cassian explains what he did while Kay was absent and they come to the conclusion that their landlord is a part of the game, possibly helping the fake cell. They contact the rebel cell and learn that they got searched by the fake cell. Kay infects the datadisk Cassian is going to give their new client (Elek) from the day before with a virus to learn their hiding spot.
31.V — Cassian goes to pass the datadisk to the client (Elek). His task is to get intel but instead he gets kidnapped by Elek. Mist Osh (the landlord) paralyzes and kidnaps Kay. Cassian escapes.
32.V — Together with local rebels Cassian frees Kay, they kill Elek and Mist. After welcoming local rebels to the bigger Rebellion, Cassian and Kay go back to the rebel base. In the evening Kay asks Draven to reassign him, but Draven refuses.
33.V — Kay low-key tortures Cassian to teach him a lesson. Under torture Cassian tells Kay that the name of the girl he likes is Thea. Kay suggests Cassian should go to therapy and work through his issues caused by being an orphan on Fest and then an orphan on the rebel base.
34–35.V + Fruitfulness Day + 1–6.VI — Kay is training Cassian at the rebel base.
7.VI — Kay and Cassian get a new mission. They are tasked with getting intel from one of the rebel informants at Coruscant.
10.VI — Kay and Cassian arrive to Coruscant.

“I think you should never assume people care about you personally out of the goodness of their hearts. You are right, though, about one thing—they are asking if we were safe because if we weren’t, we could potentially lead the wrong people to them. And nobody wants that. I tend to think it wasn’t them who searched the apartment, which would also mean the landlord was bought by the other cell, too.” Kay looks pensive for a few moments. “I’d love to have a chat with him, but it might catalyze too many consequences, and I am not willing to risk our legend yet. So this piece of information is locked from us for the time being. May I?”
Kay takes the datapad from Cassian and writes back.

> safe and sound. nothing taken. be careful.

“They are going to stay away from us now, most likely. And we need to finish this,” Kay says, nodding at his workplace, where the datadisk lays, half-disassembled and connected to his working datapad. “Give me another couple of hours. If they answer anything, let me know. Meanwhile, make me a list of all the sources of information we have around here, any people or places, or Holonet sites, anything. We need to find out everything we can about that woman.”
It’s getting late now, but Kay, despite his impeccable sense of time, doesn’t look like he’s aware of the darkness setting in behind the windows. He turns back to his work and keeps working, barely paying any attention to time, as if he doesn’t need sleep or simply switched off the annoying need for it in favor of work.

[status]odds? what odds?[/status][icon]http://s9.uploads.ru/vxoKZ.jpg[/icon][LZ]<b>Cassian Andor</b>, <br>your trouble[/LZ]Cassian remembers. No one cares about people personally, there's always some profit or advantage to gain. He does, but what he does is not relevant. He'll be better off if he changes his ways and starts to think what his mind says instead of sticking with his heart.
He'll be better agent, he'll be more like Kay. Does Kay care? But would he be a better person too? Is being a better person something he should care about? Cassian doesn't know.
What he does know is that Kay puts together a plan in the blink of an eye. It's like he doesn't have any doubts at all. As if he has his own way of making arrangements with the world and its random chances. It's easy to trust him, so Cassian does just that.
He watches the datapad carefully and arranges the list. He puts everything and everyone there, then decides all his petty resources are not much interest for a Kay and deletes half of the list.
Then he carefully adds deleted lines once more. Kay said anything. So he's give him everything. Cassian puts the important sources on the top and adds his short comments about the information he has gotten from them and if it was true. He puts a dates also and notices for the first time there are couple of sources who were silent for a long time. There's a leaflets that came out every two days until they didn't. The last one came out the day after their first rebel client, the woman, came to collect.
It's strange. He has never thought about the timing before.
The time passes. The screen of the datapad is black, dead. No one is reaching back to them. Kay said they would stay away. Does it mean if they wouldn't they are from the fake cell? Should Cassian provoke them in any way just to be sure? He feels like he has learnt a lot on the mission, and all his new skills are just waiting for him to try them.
He puts the list aside and takes the datapad.
He reads the messages. And again. And again. painfully, slowly deciding, choosing, doubting.
Then he decides, among everything ability to wait must be the most important for him.
With that Cassian puts the datapad aside and goes to bed.
It's surprisingly easy to fall asleep knowing Kay is here.

Kay is used to working long hours, but it’s clearly not the case for Cassian. He sees out of the corner of his eye how the kid stares at the datapad and, after awhile, gives up the wait and goes to bed. It’s not that Kay would like for Cassian to exhaust himself, however, he’s well aware of the teenagers’ typical impatience. He stays working some more, until the datadisk is all fine and dandy, ready to be used for the next step of their plan. Kay doesn’t feel tired, so instead of going to sleep, he busies himself with other things to do: he carefully goes over the list of the sources. Cassian did a good job, even wrote down little helpful details. For whatever reason, it makes Kay briefly smile with the corner of his mouth.
    The kid is learning.
More importantly, the kid is still not dead, and this is an achievement which goes against all Kay’s odds. He likes it. Usually things fall neatly where he predicts they will. This time they don’t, and it’s refreshing if a bit scary. But scary is fine. Scary keeps you alert. The more they look into this, the more Kay thinks they need to be alert and ready. It had to be a simple mission—and in some ways it still is. They don’t have to pose as imperial officers. Or go undercover. Kay stops and thinks about it for a few moments.
They need all the information about the woman. What if they just walked in and asked instead of digging around?
Kay knows it would be risky. Overwhelmingly so for the kid on his first mission. Less so, but still pretty risky for himself. It would be very upfront and straightforward. Kay doesn’t like this type of thing, and he avoids it as much as possible. Moreover, their appearance is known. Kay sighs and stashes the idea into the furthermost part of his mind. This would be their last resort if nothing else works. And he will make sure Cassian is aware of just how dangerous it is for him to take part in it, and he will give the kid a choice if it comes to that. It’s not going to. At least, Kay hopes it’s not going to. They will find out everything they can about this client. They should have asked the supposed rebels about the woman. Kay thinks about it before drifting off in his chair. Sleep claims him abruptly, and it looks like Kay just switched off in his seat as if he ran out of battery.

[status]odds? what odds?[/status][icon]http://s9.uploads.ru/vxoKZ.jpg[/icon][LZ]<b>Cassian Andor</b>, <br>your trouble[/LZ]Even sounds have changed and stopped to bother Cassian when he's asleep. He does hear them through his sleep (a light sleep is one of those things he learned when he was a child; one of those that he probably won't be able to unlearn), but with Kay at home everything is so easily explainable there's no need to think and to be alert about it.
In the morning, still a little groggy, Cassian checks the datapad once more, just in case - there's no messages, no news - then he takes the datadisk. He was tge one to take the job, so he batter be the one who will give it back to the client. Cassian decides it fast, but then he stops himself and tries to think. He looks at Kay who seems to be asleep and tries to think very quietly not to wake him up.
It doesn't take long though,  so in less than five minutes Cassian gives Kay a very different look. This time he wants his mentor to wake up. Cassian is sure his idea is brilliant, but not to the point when he acts without telling Kay at first.
"Listen," he says in the most confident voice he can imagine. "If they don't think I might be dangerous, if they think I'm just a kid, gullible and naїve and not knowing anything about everything, maybe I can put it to the use? To ask some questions, that are too risky for you to ask? To break in and search the landlord's place? To trust the wrong cell so they would want to use me somehow?"

Kay hates waking up. His whole body is aching, his neck especially giving him a few reasons to never repeat the mistake of falling asleep in a chair ever again. And then there’s the kid who wants something from him, and Kay isn’t sure what is it or why does it have to be so urgent, or what is going on in general. It takes him a couple of seconds—bordering on half a minute—to navigate himself through whatever Cassian is saying. The kid sure looks confident but Kay is afraid it means no good. If anything, he feels ambushed—being awakened like this.
“Don’t break in anywhere just yet,” is the first thing Kay manages to croak at Cassian. Then, clearing his throat, he continues, “We stick to the plan. You pass the datadisk to the client, they plug it in, we get their coordinates. Then we go observing, breaking in, et cetera.”
Kay doesn’t remember if he told this bit to Cassian. Maybe he didn’t. He isn’t exactly used to working with a partner still, even though he has to admit—he kind of likes having the kid around. Kay frowns, moves his palms across his face trying to wake himself up even more, or at least enough to hold a coherent conversation, and goes over the kid’s suggestion once again in his head. Cassian can probably sell being naïve and gullible. Kay doesn’t like the idea though. Especially if it is going to lead Cassian somewhere Kay won’t be able to protect him.
    Kriff, he cares.
This decides it. Kay puts his hands down on the table. The mission is always the most important thing. Not his personal attachments, not his worries, which he wasn’t even aware he had yesterday—blatantly lying to himself right here—not anything else. The mission. Kay thinks it through once again, in a calm and collected, professional manner. It can be a good move. If the kid pulls it off, which he will—Kay looks at Cassian.
“Okay, yes,” he says a bit warily. “If you can charm that client into a conversation or whatever it is you have in mind, do that. I doubt they’ll let you in more than they have to for the sake of their goal, but however far in you can get, will do us good. You sure about this?”

[status]odds? what odds?[/status][icon]http://s9.uploads.ru/vxoKZ.jpg[/icon][LZ]<b>Cassian Andor</b>, <br>your trouble[/LZ]With his newfound gift of patience Cassian doesn't get upset and waits. He reminds himself Kay knows better and still is his commanding officer, and there was 'we' in his words, so Cassian probably won't be left behind once again. He hopes he won't be. Besides, he can always change his mind, which he does.
Apparently in the morning even Kay needs some time to see a good idea and its potential. Cassian nods but doesn't smile. There's no time and no need to sell his skills.
"I was alone and didn't get into trouble. I haven't done anything suspicious or at least nothing suspicious enough for them to do something about it. I can do it. I'm ready. Well," Cassian admits, "more ready than I was at the beginning of the mission. I won't do anything stupid without letting you know, I promise."
With that he finally smiles.
"Anyway, do you want anything? To eat, to sleep? To sleep in a bed? Anything?"

+1

157

Of course, the kid is sure, because he’s sixteen and excited and sixteen, and his odds of survival are pretty low, and Kay firmly stops this train of thought right there. Cassian is going to survive this. He’s a capable person if a bit young, and Kay has to return to being impartial about him. Stars, these attachments can cloud one’s judgment.
He doesn’t know where his own newfound attachment to the kid fits in in his usually structured and coldly logical worldview. This, for one, Kay suddenly finds more worrisome than the mission Cassian thought up for himself. The kid beams at him as if Kay gave him a very expensive present, like a freighter or something.
“You’re going to be the death of me,” Kay says in a gravely serious tone of voice and gets up, unsure of what exactly it is he wants to do. Instead, he finds himself patting Cassian’s shoulder and saying, “It’s a miracle I trust you with this so please just don’t do anything stupid. With or without letting me know. You die, and I will be very distraught and quite possibly unfit for work for some time.”
All of a sudden Kay is acutely aware this is not how human communication usually works. People are not supposed to say these things out loud just like this. Instead, people should kind of read them off of each other. What people definitely don’t do is phrase it the way he did. Kay retrieves his hand and moves away, towards the kitchen, deciding he needs breakfast and some space to analyze his own switch in behavior and what to do about it, if anything.
He quickly puts together some toasts and fried eggs, and a cup of caf as black as it can possibly get. It’s a good morning, even if Kay’s body continues to ache, reminding him he’s neither young nor fit for sleeping in chairs. The light filtering through the kitchen window is pale but warm, the food is simple but tasty and the kid is risking but not going to die. Kay wills himself to stop thinking about it. Worrying isn’t productive.
Questions. He needs to think about the questions that Cassian can ask the client.

[status]odds? what odds?[/status][icon]http://s9.uploads.ru/vxoKZ.jpg[/icon][LZ]<b>Cassian Andor</b>, <br>your trouble[/LZ]Cassian isn't sure what he should say. Did Kay just joke? Or did he joke and show he cared? Or was it his Nigel persona peeking through? Or does Kay truly care about the inconvenience of being unfit for work because of his death?
He goes with simple "I won't". He won't die, he won't do anything stupid, he won't let Kay down. Everything else, once again, everything he doesn't know how to process he puts aside. He'll think again and try again later, on the base, when there's no mission to fail and no Kay to disappoint. By this time 'aside' is a pretty messy part of his mind, but Cassian will deal with it. Later. Or at least, he hopes he will.
Kay goes to the kitchen. Cassian isn't sure if he should follow, so he stays alone. For a short moment he puts his hand on the shoulder, where Kay patted him. It was nice. Even if it was just to reinforce his words, it worked. Cassian tries to be a good agent, so he remembers: sometimes with some people touches work really well. And apparently he is one of those people and he should bear it in mind so no one can use it against him.
It's pretty early and a chance his client will come right now is non-existent but Cassian still checks a front door and the datadisk just to be sure he still has it. He thinks it's better to wait outside. That way he'll be the only one to talk to. Yet it's just too early to leave now.
"I'll say you'e sleeping," he says entering the kitchen. "Your return won't be a secret for long anyway. And that way they won't bother you, they'll talk to me, and I'll be a kid who gives them information without realizing it. What do you think?"

After a bit of caf and some food, his ability to think productively makes a glorious come back. Quite possibly, him remembering that he will always be able to trace Cassian on a map if the kid takes the device with him also has something to do with it. Either way, Kay finally manages to compartmentalize this weird mumbo-jumbo of feelings and concentrate on the task at hand. By the time the kid enters the kitchen, he is back to being his usual calm and collected self.
He looks up from his plate and says, “Say I only talk to the clients who want something big and complicated—something you can’t deal with. Like viruses, as those are our specialty. Bait them into ordering something else, into coming back. We don’t want to lose the contact. Ask lots of dumb questions, play a curious teenager, which you are.” Kay gestures at Cassian with his mug and produces an easy Nigel-esque smile on his face before saying, “Drop some strong opinion on the Empire, something that can be taken either way. ‘Have you seen the latest news from the Coruscant? I couldn’t believe it!’”
    Kay drops the smile.
“Something like that. A shock, an awe usually would work. Move your entire body, don’t tense up in the shoulders. See how they react and go from there. Ask away about their job, if they’ve been here long, their favorite place, some advice on what to see while we’re here. Ask two questions which have nothing to do with the mission, and every third—for the mission. Talk more than you usually would. Watch out. And remember it’s just a dialogue. This is your territory. Do you need me to continue with the pep-talk or are you good?” Kay suddenly asks, stopping himself, and finishes his caf in one long gulp.

[status]odds? what odds?[/status][icon]http://s9.uploads.ru/vxoKZ.jpg[/icon][LZ]<b>Cassian Andor</b>, <br>your trouble[/LZ]Cassian relaxes his shoulders and tries so keep them that way. He gives a small nod now and then. It's easier to think he does't need any advice. That way he can ignore everything that can give him away and feel more confident. But his confidence isn't the problem. He was confident the first time he's gotten his solo assignment, and he has led the cell to them anyway. It worked out that time, but Cassian knows better than to believe it would this time.
So, not the confidence, then. The ratio of useful and useless questions, the body language, the shoulders, that stupid shoulders he should mind and keep relaxed at the same time.
When Kay stops and asks if he should continue, Cassian shakes his head.
"I'm good. I can do it."
After all, there's one good if not the only way to know if he really can, and that's to do it while not getting himself or Kay killed or worse, captured.

He has some time to practice. The client appears in an hour, and by that time Cassian thinks he did a remarkable job with his shoulders. He is calm, relaxed and beams with a pride for the work he did. He refuses money once again, but can't shut up about all the features his code has and all tasks it can do, until the client is smiling.
"Walk with me and tell me more, if you like. I'm in a little bit hurry," he finally suggests, and Cassian smiles back.
Soon the client has a name - Elek - and they are talking, and everything seems to go really smooth. Cassian asks question, criticizes the Empire and talks about Uquine he likes so much, because it's bright and all over the top, and fast, and is nothing like where he came from.
"Where are you from, Jeron?"
"Fest."
There a pause, almost unnoticeable one. Then Elek says: "You've got it bad from what I've heard," and Cassian nods and stays despite his quick instincts suggest he runs this very moment because of that pause.
He stays because he has to slow down and think and come to some conclusions instead of just following the feeling in his guts. And he has to get something. Everything. Anything. And has nothing so far.
They talk about the code once again, and Nigel's desire to get a challenging job, not ordinary ones Jeron can do himself, and Nigel's absence, and his return, and they laugh about it: he's wandering because he doesn't have a job that's good enough for him.
And then again.
"It's a shame he can't get drunk like all of us," Elek chuckles. "Did you ever get drunk or you are not allowed yet, kid?"
Something is wrong. He laughs it off, but he can feel it, and he knows Elek can feels him feeling it too.
It strikes him a block later. Kay can't get drunk. Nigel can.
But it's too late at that point, and he doesn't have enough time to recoil, when Elek suddenly grabs his wrist and there's no people around to see it.

Cassian doesn't return.

    Calm. Collected. Careful.
Kay suddenly finds himself remembering his own words. In mere four weeks’ time, he managed to go from being completely dispassionate about the kid to caring whether he lives or dies not because of the mission or the general, but just because. Frankly, it is alarming. Kay doesn’t like the sure tone of voice Cassian has when he says he can do it. It’s not like he doubts the kid. It’s a completely irrational thing, the way he worries about Cassian, and Kay hates it. He hates it so much. It’s not productive, it’s not useful, it’s just twisted and impossible to get rid of. Thankfully, he manages to hide it well enough.
Before the kid leaves, Kay makes sure that he has his commlink with him, just in case.
    Then there comes the waiting.
Kay doesn’t sit idly though, he busies himself with drawing a mental map of everything and looking through the news holosites and newspapers and TV programs, and everything and anything that could possibly have broadcasted or printed even a glimpse of their initial client, the woman named Marani, being killed or dead or absent. Kay finds himself distracted, the lines of text blurring in front of his eyes. He curses the worry out loud and stretches his limbs and goes to the kitchen to cook himself some lunch.
Cooking helps a little bit. Even here Kay busies himself with his mental map, linking things together and coming up with new and unexpected connections and relations between all the events. He eats quickly but then sits for a long time in front of his empty plate, looking at the opposite side of the table. Why. Why did they send another person? Why did Marani get killed at such a moment, was it just an ill timing?
Kay knows it’s been two hours. He knows when it’s been three, and four, and even five. He waits patiently. After six hours he starts mindlessly checking his commlink. The day draws to the evening. Kay keeps pondering all the same questions, over and over, until he asks just the right one. Why would the real cell send another person if the one they sent previously got killed right after she talked to Kay and Cassian?
“Son of a bitch,” Kay mutters, anger showing in the way he clenches his fists, but he immediately calms himself down.
It’s been seven hours, and Cassian is still not home.
The last time Kay Tooesso got upset, he killed an Imperial general. This time he is pissed off. The landlord is not going to like this conversation.

[icon]http://s5.uploads.ru/EQxz6.jpg[/icon][nick]Mist Osh[/nick][status]friend from work[/status]It didn't go as he planned, but that's fine. There are no mistakes, only changes of plan as his toydarian master used to say. Of course it was his master's  truth. For Mist, there were mistakes, there were consequences. There will be consequences now (even with Mist not having much to loose), but only if he changes his plan wrong.
He won't do that. He waits. Mist is almost too good with waiting. He has to wait for a permission to act, he has to wait for a squad, he has to wait for Kay to understand what's going on. He used to be better than that. It's almost painful to look at someone who was that good and see him that low. But his commanders will be happy to get him anyway. With or without the kid, good or bad - in any state, with any equipment and knowledge. It's personal. And for Mist it's a chance.
Kay will either understand what is going on and flee or understand and come right to Mist. Fleeing sounds more like Kay, so it's crucially important to stop him before he vanishes. But time passes, and Kay stays.
He stays.
Hasn't he understood yet? Who, what is he waiting for? For a boy? That possibility Mist just shakes off. Is this a part of a plan? Of Kay's plan, because after all he was good. He may still be.
He stays, and that makes thing both easier and harder. That puts Mist himself in a more danger he would like, but it means he doesn't have to catch Kay again. He's still here. Mist tries his blaster and makes sure it's in a stun mode. It would be a shame to have Kay Tooesso in his hands and accidentally kill him.
When Kay finally comes to him, it's evening already, and Mist wastes no time.
He shoots first.

Kay sets in motion, cold and calculating as usual, all the emotions draining from him. This is exactly why he doesn’t work with partners. They make things go sideways, but he’s survived worse than this. Anyone who’s ever tried killing an Imperial general and then fleeing would agree if you survive the hunt that ensues you can survive practically anything. Not that Kay knows many people who survived, or many who even succeeded in their attempt to kill the general in the first place. After all, his big brother was just as smart and perceptive as he is.
The first thing Kay does is he shoots a short message to the base. It reads as simple and concise as always, “Gone bad. A trap. DNSR. WTC. GN, found them. Answer.” Kay codes it himself this time, making sure even if it gets intercepted, nobody will be able to crack it and get a sense of what is going on. The next thing he does, he sends a message to the rebel cell, which he is more than ever sure now is the real one. Kay doesn’t curse himself for being blind or for being careless, or for taking the kid to the mission which was supposed to be much, much simpler but turned out to be a mess. He just works.
Next thing—sweeping the apartment, making sure everything is in place. Next thing—a bit of tinkering before going anywhere, because it’s time he shows some trust in locals. Next thing—putting on Nigel Harr and going to the landlord.
Kay knocks on the door three times before opening it gingerly, starting with, “Good evening,” and finishing with, ”kriff—”
He stumbles back into the corridor, his legs going numb, all of his body going numb. Kay is not a huge fan of stunning mode on any blaster, much less the one his landlord apparently has in his hand. Well, this worked out smoother than he expected. The guy saves him some time. Otherwise, Kay would have had to go on and provoke him, see if the theory checks out. Of course, it does. Sliding down the wall to the floor, Kay thinks quickly. Stunning is not killing, so for whatever reason they need him, so they will bring him in. The good question is, where.
It is in this moment when the realization dawns on Kay—they might have killed Cassian already by this point.
It does not help his temper. He liked the kid.

[nick]Mist Osh[/nick][status]friend from work[/status][icon]http://s5.uploads.ru/EQxz6.jpg[/icon]Mist has been rotten here, on Uquine for two years, three months and twelve days. It's not like he's counting, but it's hard not to when you stuck on a planet like this one and is expected to consider yourself lucky. In all this time he rarely drew any attention. But now Kay is in the corridor, and it's not subtle at all. Mist doesn't care: he'll brought Kay back, they surely will give him something better to do, somewhere better to live. He doesn't need to care about Uquine and it's petty rebels anymore.
He comes closer and looks down at Kay, although keeps some distance. Unnecessary caution it may seem, but Kay Tooesso is the most successful of all Imperial defectors. It deserves if not caution then something like a respect.
Mist checks his commlink - he still has around twelve hours until the squad is here. More that enough for him to prepare everything, so no one would doubt who provided the catch. He contacts Elek who unknowingly for him will take another, less pleasant part of an agent who almost ruined everything and made Mist to break his legend and to save the operation before it even started.
A man has to die so Mist can do his job. But a man doesn't have to know about it just yet. Together they drags Kay to a speeder. Elek limps slightly, his weight is shifting to his right foot reminding Mist that they should hurry. Rebels might be here soon and if he looses Kay, he will stand in his place when the squad arrives.
"If someone appears on a road, run them over," he commands. He ties Kay's hands and presses his blaster to his side. "Move a finger, and I'll stun you again. It's over, Kay, there ain't you can do about it."
Mist leaves everything not worrying much that someone will come. There is some information in his place, but none of it is more important than Kay is. And if someone will come... Well, the squad can have some fun then.
Mist doesn't cover Kay's eyes knowing that the speeder movement, sounds, smells will provide as much information. But he stays quiet until they reach their destination point, the warehouse close to a space port. They drag Kay inside and put him on the floor. The stun effect should come to an end soon, but Mist doesn't shoot again. Just says, "Stay quiet, don't move."
He sends Elek outside to be sure they are safe and no one followed. He isn't going to talk to Kay, but he is the first to break silence.
"I don't think you know me: I would have been long dead if you did. But I remember you well enough. I'm Mist. I want you to remember me too for the rest of your life. Me and how much harm you dis to all of us."
Mist doesn't know if his life would be long. In any other branch it would be a simple execution. But intelligent people are creative and there are punishments harsher than death for people like Kay.

What Kay does is he stays perfectly calm. Not that he has much of a choice, being stunned and all. The landlord clearly knows him or knows enough about him to know his name and appearance, to see right through the cover story. By this point Kay should probably stop referring to him as the landlord, the profession clearly doesn’t suit him. Landlords are supposed to be hospitable and friendly. Last time Kay checked, throwing a person in the back of a speeder and tying their wrists isn’t the definition of hospitality.
The job is sloppy. Kay is unimpressed. The Empire intelligence didn’t get better in his absence.
Kay follows the orders, stays quiet and doesn’t move. The warehouse where they dragged him is empty, even though it’s close to a spaceport. He can hear the spaceships taking off and landing. Kay slowly assesses his chances and his possibilities. A part of him is exhilarated with the rush of adrenalin, with the danger present in his life again, the real danger, however brief it is. It twists him in something he forgets he is at the Rebellion base. He is still pissed off, and this concoction results in his eerie, inhuman calmness.
The stun starts to achingly wear off. The man’s name is Mist, and when Kay looks him in the face, his calmness gets even eerier. His eyes are dark, and his stare is unblinking. He doesn’t answer anything. He doesn’t allow even a hint of recognition in his features. He just observes.
So this is personal. Or, rather, it is much more personal than it is a duty or want for money. Mist is an intelligence officer. Not that Kay even recognizes this guy. He used to be lieutenant-colonel three years ago, his job description didn’t suggest remembering people who served under him. There were too many. He was concerned with bigger, more important things.
I don’t know you, Kay thinks, and I don’t care who you are.
But stars forbid you did something to the kid.
Kay keeps looking at Mist. And then he smirks.
It’s a bit lopsided, his face still recovering from the stun along with his body. He had plenty of time to think this through. Kay was in the Imperial intelligence long enough to know how these people think, and if he wants he can still think like them himself. The stun was unpredictable, usually, field officers are forbidden from blowing their cover in such a rude way. But the rest—for the rest Kay left precise instructions. Clearly, this is some other game Mist is playing here. His friend, whoever he is, is most likely not in on the grand strategy of this whole endeavor. But it doesn’t matter to Kay’s instructions, not really.
So he smirks until he doesn’t anymore, and the absence of any emotion on his face feels dark as if all the lights in the city that never sleeps just went out.
Sloppy. Not searching him—sloppy. Talking to him now—sloppy. Being so sure of himself—very sloppy. Letting Kay stay in the apartment undisturbed and unobserved for seven hours—exceptionally, outstandingly sloppy. Pissing Kay off—well, that’s just suicidal.

Mist wants to wipe that smirk of him off Kay's face, but he doesn't do it. The command wants him safe and sound, a perfectly blank canvas to paint on it, so be it. Then the smirk disappears, and Kay just sits, looking more like a droid than a sentient being. As if he doesn't care about his future at all.
"I wonder what they will do to you. Will they just kill you, or maybe break you and then rewire you back to being obedient dog. Or maybe they will brand you and sell somewhere to rot. Somewhere even worse than the place they've let you crawl from at the first place. You will be an example, that's for sure."
It's his turn to smirk. An example and, if Mist is lucky, an indulgence, a sign all Intelligence people who used to be slaves are trusted again, are given another chance.
There is a possibility that it's not that he was a slave, that he's just not good enough to earn himself a better mission. Or that's what he is supposed to believe in, and what he'll prove is wrong with Kay, bound, silent and hopeless. But Kay, praised and respected in his time, was sent to the same shit hole the Uquine is. At least Mist doesn't have to take a child as a partner.
He shrugs off the thought about a boy. There's nothing he can do anyway and he has nowhere to go and no one to ask for a help. The boy is not a problem.
He throws a commlink on Kay's lap.
"Here's a souvenir for you to remember your last partner. Or your last mission. Any of those two. What?" Mist turns to a door. "You should watch around."
"Yeah. It's just... I don't really like..."
"I don't care. Do as told."
Elek looks at him for a second, but then he leaves.[nick]Mist Osh[/nick][status]friend from work[/status][icon]http://s5.uploads.ru/EQxz6.jpg[/icon]

Kay continues observing. He reads everything Mist gives him, knowingly or not. For a few moments he doubts himself, whether or not his initial judgment is correct. Mist might be toying with him, he might have left the mask of a landlord but it doesn’t mean he necessarily is his true self right now. This might be a ploy, a game. Kay watches Mist’s face, his own gaze calm and dispassionate, and listens to his words, to his voice, notes where the other man is looking, his intonations, everything.
No, this is not a game.
This is deeply personal for him.
The way Mist concentrates on one specific punishment—being sold as a slave again—Kay finds especially peculiar. It wasn’t exactly common knowledge how he ended up as an Imperial intelligence officer, certainly not in the last few years of his service. Once you get high enough it becomes wiser to keep your heritage hidden. But then again, as Kay once told Cassian, one slave will always be able to spot another.
Kay tilts his head ever so slightly, his eyes never leaving Mist’s face even though he isn’t looking at his face now, he is looking at all of him at once. There are several places masters like to put their brand on. Wrists, shoulder blades, chest, shoulders. Faces, but rarely. A slave has to be mighty disobedient for a master to do that—although Kay heard stories of masters who brand their slaves’ faces just for kicks and giggles. He doesn’t see anything out in the open but then again, if Mist got away through military he isn’t going to wear his branding like a badge of honor, if he even has one.
Kay doesn’t catch the commlink, somehow, he doesn’t see it coming. He picks it up from his lap and looks at it briefly, then tosses it away silently. The other man who interrupts their little one-sided conversation sounded nervous. Kay doesn’t get his hopes high, it might be hours before anyone comes for him. The good thing is, the only one whose survival he actually cares about is Cassian, and the kid might still be alive. Kay doesn’t believe in the grand gestures like throwing him a device and saying a bunch of words clearly aimed to put him off-balance. The kid survived kriffing Fest being what, five years old? He should know a trick or two.
As for his own survival, Kay has little interest in it. He took his brother’s life in cold blood, he doesn’t quite see how the universe allows him to live anyway. There are things, however right and righteous they are, that people aren’t supposed to do.
Kay doesn’t regret it in the least. The surprise on the fucker’s face.
He keeps his silence. Silence prompts people to talk, especially if they are nervous or feel like they need to unwind, release some tension. Besides, what he can tell Mist? Kay isn’t sorry. He isn’t the begging type either. He isn’t the bragging type nor the threatening type, nor the talkative type in general. He is certainly not going to share his complicated past with a stranger. Kay shuffles a bit, sitting more comfortably now, but that’s the only motion coming from him. He expects the wait to be long.

[status]odds? what odds?[/status][icon]http://s9.uploads.ru/vxoKZ.jpg[/icon][LZ]<b>Cassian Andor</b>, <br>your trouble[/LZ]Escape is easy. Escape is fast and sets everything inside Cassian right.
The man (Elek loses his name because it's irrelevant now: he's an enemy, his name is a distraction) is older, bigger, stronger. He should know better than to grab one Cassian's hand, leaving another one free.
But Cassian can't win it.
He doesn't try.
It takes a second to decide what he can leave behind if can at all. Then Cassian loosens his commlink with his free hand, because that's what free hands are for, he goes down and pushes the man's stomach with his head making him to step back. With force he kicks man's kneecap to slow him down and then he runs away, alive, free and untouched.
He runs until he is out of breath making sure he doesn't follow any of predictable destinations. Then he stops and his old quick thinking gives away to the new, slow one.
Elek knew who Kay is and gave it away. As if he wanted Cassian to know he knows. As if he wanted him to do something about it. But did he want him to be caught - or to run away and bring the news to Kay? In any case they know where he lives. No coming back will win some time. Cassian doesn't have his commlink anymore, but it may be a good thing. They will be able to trace it with the one Kay has. Cassian can't return, because there's their landlord, and he is with the false cell, or he might be, or he might not. But Kay has to know what's going on. Because they had the agreement to run and to be on their own, but it's not fair if Cassian as the only one who knows they are on their own. Kay may be in danger. He has left the commlinc, but he can't leave Kay.
The hardest part of the job is deciding. That Cassian knows for sure.
He brightens when remembers about the datapad and people they were talking to just the day before. If they are real cell, he can find them and he can talk to Kay. So he should find them, and quickly enough, and not get caught again.
The plan is as easy as it's impossible. But Cassian does his best to ignore it.
It can be done. It should be done.
But it's a late evening when two dark shapes block him the way. Cassian recognizes the lekku on one of them, but gets suspicious anyway. Fast to trust anyone beforehand now he stands on trusting himself and Kay, but no one else.
"Your officer has sent us," the twi'lek says.
Cassian doesn't flinch, but he notes that 'officer'.
"The Rebellion contacted us. I know who you are."
"Why should I trust you?"
"Because I'm still not sure I should trust you. I expected your body to lie in some dumpster, and yet you are alive and intact. If that's a trap..."
"What's a trap?" Cassian frowns.
"A rescue mission. And an attack if we do everything right."
It's Kay, Cassian thinks and nods.
"I'll go with you," he says but stays alert until he sees the message from home.

At the warehouse Mist slowly loses his patience. He looks at Kay, at the datapad, at Kay again, and, sometimes, at Elek who keeps return inside.
"What?!" he asks finally.
"I think there's something going on. Outside. Something big."

Mist’s impatience is growing just as much as Kay’s declines. It looks as if he goes into this low-power mode, sitting perfectly still and just blinking rarely. Kay can easily think up an escape plan, which will most likely result in Mist, the other guy and himself injured and, quite possibly, some of them also dead. After all, he still has his clothes unsearched. It’s astonishing how sloppy people get when they are close to something they thought never possible. It’s revenge. Kay isn’t sure for what exactly, but there are only few things in the world that can drive people and make them so determined, and none of the others seem to apply to Mist. At least not from what Kay was able to gather. One thing he is sure of—Mist has never dreamed of actually getting his hands on Kay. This wasn’t some kind of an ambush for him, it’s just a coincidence they all happened to be at Uquine at the same time.
Sitting all the way through the night resulted in crushing tiredness for Kay when it was pretense-work, but right now he is buzzing with energy on the inside. Hours drag on, and Kay finds himself in a state alike meditation. There aren’t many ways to pass time here. Mist’s exclamation breaks him out of it, and for the first time in a very long while Kay turns his head and looks at them both, Mist and his partner. Unlikely a friend, more like a colleague, judging by what Kay has observed. And not the one Mist is particularly fond of.
    “Three,” Kay says.
Meaning, it’s three in the morning.
It’s a good timing, he likes it. He suggested several, depending on what the rebels—he counts them as rebels now—can gather about this entire operation, whether or not it’s sanctioned or not, if there are other Imperial agents helping, whether they notice something suspicious going on in the spaceport. Kay looks around and picks a sturdy column to stand next to. Then he gets up, making a quick work of stretching his muscles, and goes over to it. It’s just a precaution, he’s fairly certain local rebels aren’t going to do anything rash.
But if they do choose to come in guns blazing, or even worse—to blow something up or throw something in, like a grenade—he better be somewhere safe. The column is the safest spot to stand next to, as far as he can tell. After all, it’s not like he can just openly walk to the other side of the warehouse, and the column is right here. It takes him four strides to stand next to it. Kay lowers his gaze and looks at his hands.
“Three is good,” he says in a level voice.
Meaning, three turns of the rope around his wrists are good, and the knots are alright, but stars, why did no one search him?

[status]odds? what odds?[/status][icon]http://s9.uploads.ru/vxoKZ.jpg[/icon][LZ]<b>Cassian Andor</b>, <br>your trouble[/LZ]It is the cell. The real one, the small group of rebels, not having much, not trusting many. Cassian knows in the very minute he sees their headquarters and rebels themselves. They have that distinctive flair he can't name but remember well enough from Fest and it's rebel people.
The twi'lek's name is Corvin. Cassian remains Jeron just in case. To help Kay they don't need his real name, and he was wrong about trusting people before. A little more caution might be a good thing to try.
The headquarters is under the cantina they came to.
By the time they reaches it Cassian knows they doesn't need his commlink to trace Kay or to contact him. Everything is taken care of and everyone around is busy, which means he can spare some time and scowl.
"Why didn't you just let us know? In any way. It could be done."
"That's why," Corvin shows a pile of leaflets Cassian recognizes immediately. He had remembered it just this morning. He comes closer and picks one. There's no picture, but the headline is big, black and intimidating. There's an Imperial spy, imposer, pretending to be a slicer. It's about Kay.
"So you knew?" Cassian asks. "When we came here, everyone have left because of us?"
"Yeah. Marani brought the news and was killed. It was... cruel. Ruthless. It scared everyone enough to postpone the publication and to wait. To watch you. You didn't act as we expected, so in time we weren't sure it was you who killed her. It wasn't you, was it?"
Cassian nods and stays silent to remember a woman with sparkles in her eyes. Then he raises his head.
"She was a double agent, I remember it. Did she... The job we did, was it for you or the ba... other guys?"
"For us. She had to plant it, but I never knew if she did. She was the one who  knew how it works anyway."
"No, she wasn't," Cassian says finding a task for himself.
Corvin gives him a datapad and never leaves him alone. Cassian understands. In twi'lek's place he wouldn't trust himself either. It's around midnight, and the mission should start soon. He wants to join it, but if recognized we'll spoil everything. And this is more important. Because if Marani had a time to start the program...
She had, and it means that he has an access to everything the fake call has ever documented. There are reports and commands that were sent, and there are lists of informants and plans that no one have seen. Cassian smiles to Corvin.
"I'm going to need your help."
Together bit by bit they go through the data. Copy everything, then destroy the old ones and change the new ones until the reports that were sent don't match the internal data at all. As if they were forged, falsified to keep the unnecessary mission going. There are informants they change with names of long dead people. Cassian has a feeling that the real names will soon become names of dead people too, but he doesn't ask about it.
It's three in the morning when Corvin takes a commlink.
"Clean," he says. "Don't kill anyone unless it's the only way. We do it clean, and there's no imperial agents here."
And the barely noticeable circle that kept shrinking around the warehouse stops for a moment. It changes, breaks, switching to another plan. A moment - and there are none of them. It's enough for Mist who came outside to believe there's nothing but Elek's fear. He feels no fear anymore but one: he doesn't calculate the risks being afraid he'll scare off his sudden luck. he's so close. He'll leave and never return, he'll be the agent he always wanted to be. Everything will be good.
He says it to Elek and takes a dose of stim. A third, perhaps, but who is counting them? Exept Elek, of course. Mist sighs, but then smiles deciding his scared sidekick would draw an attention for them. He takes him inside and shoots. He'll just add an escape attempt which ended with the death of young green man. He doesn't need anyone at that point. All he has to do is to wait. That he can do.
"I didn't allow you to move," he says focusing his gaze with difficulty on Kay. Mist switches his blaster back into a stun mode and points it. But before he can soot it, there's a lout KABOOM somewhere at the spaceport.
"What the hell?" he asks and for some reason looks at Elek.

    “No, you didn’t,” Kay says.
Somehow, he didn’t see the death of the other man coming quite so soon, but Mist kills him easily and leaves himself vulnerable. No wonder they posted him on Uquine. No offense to local rebels, this is just about as safe a posting for somebody so sloppy as it can get. This changes things a little bit. Kay thinks quickly, calculating his chances and the best way to proceed. He could attack Mist, there is no one to help him now. There is a chance, a rather big one as well, that he can win this one on his own. The other option would be to run and hide and take care of the damn ropes.
He still has to find Cassian, though.
Mist is clearly losing it, his eyes blown from whatever drug he’s taking. This explains the sloppiness, the carelessness. This also explains the posting. It’s basic training gone sideways—sometimes Intelligence officers get hooked up on the drug they are supposed to learn how to act around, how to compensate for. So they could function if they were drugged. If only Kay knew what exactly it is Mist is taking. He doesn’t have time to guess from the man’s behavior.
“No, you did not,” Kay repeats and suddenly moves, as if the explosion somewhere outside sets him off, too.
He gets close to Mist, trying his best to evade the blaster, carefully steps around him, putting his arms above the man’s head and around his chest, his arms, trapping him. And just like that Kay lifts Mist from the ground ever so slightly and uses his tied wrists to press the man against his chest, making sure the heels of his hands dig into the solar plexus. It’s not yet truly painful, at first Kay is more interested in not being stunned than in injuring his enemy.
“If the kid is dead,” he says in that same disinterested, calm voice and doesn’t continue, just applies a bit more force. This time—enough to hear a rib or two crack.
If the kid is dead, there is no Imperial Intelligence officer on this planet who is going to survive.

[nick]Mist Osh[/nick][status]friend from work[/status][icon]http://s5.uploads.ru/EQxz6.jpg[/icon]"He's not," Mist croaks.
Is there another explosion, or the sound is in his ears only? The warehouse is shifting, and there are bright white spots on a ceilingt, and Kay was so fast. They must be giving him something, stuff him with rebellion drugs to make him so fast. It's that or Mist is the slow one. No, that can't be truth. He is quick, smart, too good for this place.
And he will get out from it alive and with a victory.
"He's not, but you won't find him without me. He is alive, but won't be for long if you kill me."
And another one. Was Elek right? Is there something outside? Is he in danger? The squad will come soon. In the morning the latest.
"They'll get you without my help. The Empire. You are not forgotten, they will do everything to get you. You need help. Let me go - and I will help. I promise."
It sounds good to Mist. Kay will get along, and will let him go. Then he needs a second or two - or maybe five or ten, because his blaster is on the floor and little bugger is hard to notice at night with stim sparkles bloking his sight. And then he stun Kay. It's easy.
It's very easy.
There's another explosion, but Mist doesn't even notice that one. The spaceport guards, though, do, leaving an old warehouse they always keep an eye on.
No one sees rebels entering.
There wasn't even a lock on a door.

It’s a disgrace, how low the Imperial intelligence has fallen if they keep people like Mist.
“It’s difficult to tell whether you’re telling me this because I can kill you or because he is truly alive. Forgive me my doubts,” Kay says politely and doesn’t loosen the grip. “You lost your chance to get on my good side a couple of hours ago.”
He carefully takes a few steps back from the dropped blaster and presses even harder, this time definitely not only hearing but feeling Mist’s ribs cracking. Usually, Kay avoids using brute force, not taking any pleasure in a man’s pain, preferring to outsmart his opponents rather than break them physically, but this time he is pissed off. His rage, just like everything about him, is cold and calculating. Mist can still be useful, if not for finding Cassian then for the local rebels.
Of course, he isn’t forgotten, he’s on a kriffing undercover mission. Kay doesn’t say it.
“You are very lucky,” Kay continues instead in a low voice, “very lucky,” he repeats, letting Mist drop to the ground, “that Cassian is a capable young man and might’ve survived the two of you, sloppy agents.”
A bunch of cracked ribs is going to prevent him from acting out, for sure.
Kay spits on the floor next to Mist, and this is the moment when somebody gets in the warehouse. Kay immediately moves towards the blaster and picks it up, switching it back to regular shooting instead of stunning. Those who just entered better be rebels, because he doesn’t have much cover, and his wrists are still tied together. It won’t prevent him from shooting the Imperials down given a chance, though, if he’s out of luck and it is them.

[nick]Mist Osh[/nick][status]friend from work[/status][icon]http://s5.uploads.ru/EQxz6.jpg[/icon]There's another explosion, this time it's neither somewhere outside nor in his mind. In it's his body, clear, loud, blocking everything, for a short moment separating Mist from everything. Because the pain is so strong his brain can't even process it.
He returns to a reality with a scream that might be his. His legs buckles and the floor hits him hard. He doesn't feel Kay's grip anymore, but feels what remains of it: shattered ribs, tears hanging on eyelashes, shirt damp from a sweat. Mist sucks in painful breathes and doesn't really care about anything else but the fact that he hurts.
Rebels, be contrast, are interested in everything. They slow down for just a second.
"Don't shoot. You've contacted us, we are from a local cell. We should hurry up, the Imperial squad is coming here. Need some help with this?" asks the rebel and wave his people to continue. He comes closer to Kay to cut him loose.
The rest of rebels divide. Some of them are searching the warehouse, looking for anything interesting or useful. Couple of them haul Mist and search him, taking his commlink, some credits, three single-use stim-shots.
"Fancy overdose?" asks one of them Mist.
The rebel who was talking earlier winces, but then looks at Kay.
"It's not a bad idea actually. They'll find him and take everything as some junky delusions. With what your kid did it might work. We've found him, by the way. If it's important to you now."

Having his hands free is a bliss, and Kay even tucks the blaster in his pants just so he can rub at his wrists. Looking around the floor, he picks up Cassian’s commlink, before turning to one of the rebels. They don’t exchange names, but Kay isn’t that interested anyway. The only important words he hears are about Cassian. The kid is alive and is with the cell, everything worked out in the end. For a second he considers asking whether the kid’s injured but then decides against it. It’s not as important at the moment.
“I broke his ribs. If he’s lucky, he’ll die from a punctured lung in a couple of hours. If not, then in half a day. Do whatever you see fit with him, I don’t care,” Kay says. “They won’t believe him even if he survives. His posting here was some kind of a punishment, from what I gather. That one, however,” he points at the other man, lying dead on the floor, “needs to vanish. You know a good place to hide a body we don’t want to be found for weeks, possibly months?”
Kay is fairly certain there’s bound to be one in the rebel’s mind. He puts Cassian’s commlink in his pocket and holds the blaster again, checking it out more carefully now. Imperial standard issue, not something bought around here. The guy clearly didn’t plan on staying here after handing Kay over to his colleagues. This might’ve turned out awkward. Kay is sure his boss would be able to pull him out of this peculiar situation, but what would be the explanation for the Rebellion?
He doesn’t have time to ponder on what-ifs and would-bes, instead helping the rebels to carry the body outside to decide what to do with it. He leaves the others to deal with Mist, not quite trusting himself with the guy. Kay doesn’t like how all of it makes him feel. He doesn’t like this attachment he apparently has to the kid. Everything, all the emotions he postponed dealing with, suddenly seem to crush him, and Kay isn’t sure how long he’ll be able to hold it off. He still needs to function for a bit longer.
Kay can think who he is truly loyal to these days when they’re done with the body.

"He won't be lucky to be high then," the rebel decides calling his people off, taking stim-shots with him. After all you never know. In a rebellion everything might be helpful.
Mist doesn't mind. He's still busy with pain, his rattle breathing and coughing that leaves a metallic aftertaste on his tongue. He can't get up. He can't even curse people who ruined his only chance for a fresh start.
Rebels leave as quickly as they appeared, only few of them stay inside to keep an eye on the imp until he dies. They take a dead body with them. The guard is still on the far side of the spaceport, so no one sees them, no one notices their already cold and slowly going stiff burden.
"A landfill on the northern outskirts," the rebel says when they reach a speeder. "There are trash hills and garbage mountains. It's impossible to find anything and anyone there."
He dismisses the larger part of his group, and they dissolve in a night. The night itself slowly lets in greyish tones - the first sign of the morning to come. The rebel starts the speeder, contacting the headquarters. His report is short, the answer is brief as well. Everyone is alive, free and intact. The best operation they had in months.
"I can handle the cargo myself," he says then. "And drop you somewhere close to our headquarters. You did enough already. And if you are in danger and can put in danger us, you better take your kid and get out of here. The sooner the better."[nick]Mist Osh[/nick][status]friend from work[/status][icon]http://s5.uploads.ru/EQxz6.jpg[/icon]

A landfill sounds fitting, so Kay nods and gets on the speeder. The rebel’s words draw a huff from him, “I am an Intelligence officer of the Rebellion, do you think I am ever not in danger?” He looks at the warehouse briefly, then continues, “There’s going to be an extraction squad in the spaceport in a couple of hours. Beware of them. And thank you. Couldn’t have done it without you.” Kay says it simply, his calm voice not betraying any emotion. “Headquarters it is, then.”
On the way, Kay muses about the Empire and his mission, and how it would’ve turned out if he did get captured. He doesn’t care for his life, and he isn’t exactly fond of the Empire, not like he used to be as a wide-eyed kid from a slave planet. There is nothing wide-eyed about him anymore. But they struck a deal, and he has to keep his word. They let him kill Troy in revenge for his home planet if he infiltrates the Rebellion for them using it as his cover story. Kay’s best guess—somebody wasn’t very happy with his big brother. A win-win. If he did get captured though, it might’ve complicated things too much.
How long would he be in captivity before his boss would get him out? Stage an escape for him, possibly. He’s an asset for when the big game begins, when the Empire gets ready to extinguish any thought of a rebellion from the galaxy. Then he can walk away. It’s been three years, and, admittedly, the Rebellion treats him a bit better than the Empire, but ultimately there isn’t much difference.
The kid, though. The kid is an entirely different thing.
He was never in the plan. Kay was very careful about not getting close to anyone. And it worked, all of them rebels not very keen on talking to the deserter. Cassian, on the other hand. It might’ve been his own fault, and Kay finds himself amused by the thought. Maybe he’s getting old. Sentimental. This motivational game he thought up. He has to play his role, right? So he was playing it the best he could. Making sure the general’s pet is safe and entertained and learning something useful—and not dying. Making sure there is no reason for the general to get suspicious about his loyalty.
It’s not like he has another big brother, ranking as a general, stashed somewhere in the Imperial closet. If his cover blows, that is that. Gone.
Kay gets off the speeder, nodding at the rebel, and hurries to the local cell’s headquarters. He checks that no one is following him before entering the building, and shakes off all of his thoughts.
“Where’s the kid?” is the first question Kay asks.

[status]odds? what odds?[/status][icon]http://s9.uploads.ru/vxoKZ.jpg[/icon][LZ]<b>Cassian Andor</b>, <br>your trouble[/LZ]He works together with the twi'lek until there is nothing to change or delete or edit. Then he waits for the rescue operation to start, to end, to succeed. Waiting is hard, but Cassian has to agree with rebels. He can draw an unnecessary attention, and he is not one of the local cell. He doesn't know how they work, how they communicate, they don't know him either. Thanks to Kay they have a stable contact with the home base, but they still don't trust him or Cassian fully. At least that's what Cassian think is truth. He doesn't argue with that.
So, he stays. He waits. He constantly reminds to ask about Kay every time they receive or send a message.
It's very late - or is it early already? - he's tired, but knows he won't sleep. Just won't be able to, not until Kay is back.
Worrying about him is not hard, it's natural. And with that Cassian cleans everything he has put aside earlier. Kay might have killed the Fest cell, he might have been an Imperial, a slave, whatever, whoever else. It doesn't matter. What does matter is that he is fair, smart, and that Cassian worries about him very much. He doesn't worry about him as his officer, as an older and much more skillful agent who can show him a trick or two, or as anyone else, but Kay as he is, with all his past and present, patched together in a peculiar and contradicting way. It's not about learning anymore or becoming an agent. It's about Kay himself.
So he waits, sitting at the table, checking again information on the datapad.
And waits.
And waits.
Then he wakes up and raises his head from the table, hearing a familiar voice.
"I'm here!"
he stands up and rushes to Kay and hugs him for a second, not minding rebels around them or the fact that he is practically adult.
"I'm fine, nothing to worry about. What about you? Did he hurt you?"

“This”—Kay says, startled by a sudden hug he did not see coming—”is new.”
He is calm as always, but this time the tension almost visibly seeps out of him. It‘s been a long, long night, and for the first time, Kay feels tired. He is still very much alert and aware of his surroundings, and the locals, who are looking at them, some smiling, others shaking their heads or scoffing, even though Cassian quickly stops hugging him. For a second Kay just looks at him, his eyes trained to notice any sign of pain or alarm, but looks like Cassian is telling the truth.
“He sure tried, kiddo,” he takes the commlink out of his pocket and gives it back to Cassian. “I didn’t believe a single word.”
Kay doesn’t smile but his voice sounds a bit softer than usual, and then he puts his hand on top of Cassian’s head and ruffles his hair in a brotherly gesture. This is a problem, he thinks. He has to deal with the problem, get Cassian reassigned or something. He can’t care. However, all of this is going to wait until the base. Kay looks around and finds someone who looks competent enough to ask for a datapad and gets busy. In half an hour his commlink stops transmitting his position to the cell’s headquarters. Then he makes sure to write to the base, detailing when they are coming back. To the local rebels, he promises to get clear of the planet once him and Cassian both get enough sleep but then decides against it.
“We’ll go now. Our job is done. Welcome to the bigger Rebellion,” he says to one of the rebels who seems to be in charge around here. “Don’t bother escorting us to the spaceport, I guess you better lay low for now. Cassian, let’s go. You can catch up on sleep while we are in the hyperspace.”
Despite being clearly pleased with Cassian still being well and alive, this is the first time after entering the headquarters that Kay addresses him or even pays attention to his existence. His calmness poorly covers his tiredness, Kay obviously pushes himself to his limits, eager to finish the mission before something else comes up. He doesn’t like the idea of running into an Imperial squad at the spaceport. He doesn’t like the idea of running into anyone at the spaceport, but their ship is still parked there, and they do have to go. Better sooner than later.

[status]odds? what odds?[/status][icon]http://s9.uploads.ru/vxoKZ.jpg[/icon][LZ]<b>Cassian Andor</b>, <br>your trouble[/LZ]Kay answers about words. It's strange, it's not what Cassian asked about. Kay tired and it shows. Or maybe he just cares more about very different kind of being hurt. Cassian doesn't ask about it. It's a wrong time, a wrong place. They have to make sure the mission is a success and to leave. And they do. Well, Kay does, there's nothing more to do for Cassian but wait and stay quiet.
The wait isn't long. Kay calls him, but he calls him with a wrong, his real name. He must be really tired. Or, probably, now it doesn't matter for the mission. It still does matter for Cassian. It - and the way the twi'lek looks at him.  He trusted Cassian with his cell, and Cassian didn't trust him with his name. Even with his name.
It doesn't matter, Cassian tells himself. What matters is that they are alive, and they are returning home, and the job is done.
The spaceport is busy, guards are searching for someone and the air is smoky, but no one tries to stop them. The spaceship is on it's place, and the boarding is fast, easy.
Cassian sinks into a copilot's seat. He's feeling tired, as if he hasn't sleep in a month. He can only imagine what it's like for Kay.
"Yous should sleep," he says, "after the take-off."
He stays silent for a moment.
"They knew. Somehow they knew who you are. Who you were, I mean. The best I could do was to run. But... I don't know. If I made a wrong choice... I didn't want them to get you. I'm sorry it happened to you."
